A Letter from the WACUBO President

Happy Spring! I hope you and your institutions are having a productive term and are beginning to see some hope for a covid-reduced future. As the vaccine rolls out within our states, there is a feeling of getting back to something more normal. But don’t let your guard down—we still have a way to go with Covid-19 prevention.
WACUBO committees are very busy planning the Business Partner Web Series, other workshops, and the Virtual Annual Conference. By providing an institution rate to attend May 24–26, we currently have about 1,800 individuals signed up to participate in the conference. The planning committees are working out logistics to make this an exciting opportunity for all.
I also want to thank Katy Rees and the Women’s Leadership Forum planning team for an excellent event.
Event Recap: DEI Happy Hour on March 15, 2021

The March 15 Happy Hour was designed by the WACUBO Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee to provide the opportunity for making meaningful, professional connections. Facilitated by the DEI chair, Carina Celesia Moore, the hour was packed with a variety of activities including a fun video “Take a Seat, Make a Friend”, from SoulPancake, as well as breakout sessions, and lots of engaging conversations. Members were randomly assigned into groups of three for each of the breakout sessions, and were given questions from which to choose:
- What is something that people are often surprised to learn about you?
- What are one or two things on your bucket list?
- Who inspires you? Why?
After three rounds of conversations, members reconvened and considered the question, “What is one thing outside of your job that you have in common with others in your breakout room?” This question surfaced many things members have in common.
At the conclusion of the Happy Hour, participants posted comments in the Chat including,
- “It was wonderful to get to know my chat room mates better.”
- “The small group of three people was very effective to get to know new people. I think that is important so members feel comfortable and included.“
- “Thank you for this wonderful Happy Hour!”
At the March 15 Happy Hour, meaningful connections were had by all! We look forward to seeing you at the April 20 Happy Hour!
WACUBO 2021 Virtual Annual Conference

If you haven't already, it is time to register for this year's virtual Annual Conference. The conference program combines insightful sessions, compelling workshops, stimulating panel discussions, and incredible networking opportunities among fellow industry professionals. WACUBO 2021 Service Project Spotlight
Every year, WACUBO participates in a Service Project in connection with the Annual Conference. Recently, WACUBO re-envisioned its service project to incorporate and encourage the higher education presence while providing a valuable community service to local schools with youth and students who may not have thought higher education was an option available to them.
This year, we ask that you help us support a school, Fairview Elementary of Anchorage, AK for the 2021 Service Project! Fairview Elementary School is a public elementary school that is home to 363 students in grades Pre-K to 6th.
We are asking all members who can help to purchase items off the Amazon Wish List.
Note! You do not have to be registered for the WACUBO 2021 Virtual Annual Conference to support Fairview Elementary School.
