A Letter from the WACUBO President

Happy New Year! I hope you and your families were able to enjoy a restful break, holiday celebration, and have some fun, despite this continuing pandemic. Here’s to great hopes for the beginnings of a recovery and a return to more in-person opportunities at work and school as the year moves along. I am looking forward to a vaccine, as well as figuring out how differently we will work and thrive in the future.
We are busy with WACUBO activity and hope you are excited about our upcoming professional development opportunities. Registration for our first-ever virtual annual conference will open in a few weeks, and we are trying something new!
Nichol Luoma Receives 12th Annual 2020 Positively Powerful Woman Award
Nichol Luoma, Vice President of Arizona State University Business Services, University Sustainability Operations Officer, and Chief Procurement Office, was recently awarded the 2020 Positively Powerful Woman Award with recognition on Sustainability Leadership.

WACUBO 4-Part Workshop Series Update

During December, WACUBO hosted the first two sessions of a four-part Zoom-based strategy and leadership program titled The Future of Higher Education – Shaping Your Institution and Leaders Through and After the Pandemic. More than 70 CBOs/CFOs and other leaders from 50 institutions across the WACUBO region participated in the sessions.
These first two sessions were led by Dr. Paul Friga, professor of strategy at UNC-Chapel Hill and Vice President of Strategy at ABC Insights. During the first session, Paul was joined by WACUBO President and New Mexico State University Strategic Chief Financial Officer, Ruth Johnston, for a discussion of strategy development and his framework four P’s: Position, Priorities, Performance and Payments.

Higher Education Accounting & Reporting Workshop February 11–12, 2021
Join Michael Baumert and Frank Wasilewski as they go beyond the basics of accounting and reporting and expand your knowledge and effectiveness as a leader in higher education finance. This workshop offers attendees a solid review of the theoretical framework of higher education accounting and reporting.
Registration will open in early January.

Women's Leadership Symposium February 23–25, 2021
Join us for this forum focusing on diversity and strategies for professional women in higher education business roles. Women in mid-career positions who aspire to further advance their roles in higher education are encouraged to attend this professional development forum. Meet with successful leaders in higher education and participate in activities designed to build the skills necessary for continued career advancement.
