Session 5B: What If Leadership February 6, 2023
Field of Study: Personal Development Program Level: Overview
1 CPE Credits
Janet Burkhardt, University of Denver

Description

Going from We’ve always done it this way to What If; Innovative Thinking in Higher ED

How many times have you sat at your desk thinking;?

“Why do we do it this way? This is crazy! I know there’s a better way to do it.”

Complaints don’t equal action. Thinking about change and doing something about it are two very different things.  A good idea won’t do any good unless it’s shared in a way people can hear it.

In this high-energy and engaging session, Janet Burkhardt, Assistant Vice Chancellor of University Financial Services at the University of Denver, will share tips and tools for getting your great ideas heard and implemented.  When you adopt a What If mindset, you create opportunities to streamline your workload and energize your daily work environment.

The world has changed and Higher Ed must change with it.  Students, employees, vendors and senior leadership demand easier, faster and better service delivered in ways that work for them.  As Higher Education Professionals, you interact with some of the populations mentioned above all day, every day. This gives you a unique opportunity to see what’s not currently working, and how to make things better. (Even with limited resources).  Knowing how to approach your work with a What If mindset is the first step in making meaningful change for students, and in the process it might even make your day flow better.

As the University of Denver’s Assistant Vice Chancellor of University Financial Services, I have chosen to adopt the philosophy of “What If Leadership.”  I guide my staff to make decisions based on a healthy mix of pragmatism, curiosity and creativity.  In my 20+ years as a leader, I have found that boldness must always precede brilliance.  In order to move an institution forward, we must get out of the “We’ve always done it that way” trap and be fearless enough to ask “What If?”  A “What If?” attitude enables us to think beyond the status quo and design unique solutions for day to day challenges.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session participants will:

  • Approach daily work with a What If mindset and attitude
  • Create a step-by-step plan to implement new ideas
  • Think through ideas for potential roadblocks
  • Apply What If ideals into next-level presentation
  • Use What If language to articulate ideas.
