*This is a half-day workshop offered once each day.
Field of Study: Behavioral Ethics Program Level:

Alejandra Rincón, Ph.D., Assistant Vice-Chancellor and Chief of Staff, Co-Director Advancing Excellence in Staff Recruitment – A partnership with Human Resources, Office of Diversity and Outreach , Curriculum Lead – Latinx Center of Excellence, Associate Adjunct Professor – Family & Community Medicine, University of California San Francisco

Description

Diversifying upper management at institutions of higher education is often stated as a goal of strategic plans but remains a challenge and unfulfilled promise. In a novel partnership between the Office of Diversity and Outreach and Human Resources, UCSF has developed a program that requires that all upper management recruitments (including those at the Chancellor cabinet’s level), to follow a standard process of hiring. Grounded in a firm understanding of current labor data and adjusting to business needs, the program includes a number of set requirements for the search committee including:

(1) use of an Equity Advisor who serves as a steward during the recruitment process;
(2) ensuring a diverse search committee by gender, race and LGBT status;
(3) training on unconscious bias during the recruitment process and
(4) use and understanding of Affirmative Action Plan data in regard to labor composition within the recruitment area.

A look at initial data from the program shows the positive impact that standard practices have on equity goals.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session participants will:

  •  Describe the background and history of the UCSF Anti Racism Initiative and how this approach could be applied at your institution
