A Letter from the WACUBO President

Ruth Johnston
Strategic Chief Financial Officer
New Mexico State University

Having just led my first WACUBO Board meeting, I want to offer some thoughts about this coming year. Yes, it is unprecedented. Not only are we continuing with the COVID-19 pandemic, but we are suffering financial woes, and we have growing racial unrest. It is a hard time to be leaders in higher education, and higher education needs leaders like us to speak out, and to listen deeply. This is a call to our resilience and our ability to support our students, staff and faculty as we adapt and learn, seize opportunities, rethink how we do everything, and keep up our stamina.

What do you like most about the opportunities WACUBO gives you as a professional?

It is a highly collaborative group and I enjoy the networking aspect of it the most. I feel comfortable reaching out to individuals I have met within the organization. We sharing information that helps further all our organizations. The curricula that is offered is very relevant to CBO's across the nation. I consider myself an introvert so the connections I have made have made me feel more at ease. I am also a military spouse and have had to move around the country frequently, I can lean on my WACUBO colleagues to support me during my transitions from state to state.

Mentoring Program Update

The 2020/21 WACUBO Mentoring Program is underway!

The program kicked off recently with a virtual orientation workshop, where participants were able to learn about the program components, connect with one another, as well as meet one-on-one with their mentors in a virtual break-out session.

Since its inception in 2016, this unique year-long program intentionally targets mentorship at the Chief Financial Officer (CFO)/Chief Business Officer (CBO) level and has paired experienced CFOs/CBOs with individuals aspiring to serve in these roles as their next career step. As we enter the 5th year of the WACUBO Mentoring Program, we are delighted to recognize the 2020/21 cohort of outstanding mentees and dedicated mentors.

Please join us in congratulating this year’s mentees and extending our thanks to our mentors for their time, willingness, and dedication to this program.
